Artists Describing Their Art:

James Johnson - The basis of my work is the exploration of universal patterns of being common to everyone such as shadow, hero, or trickster. My interest in patterns of being is a fascination that we all share common behaviors or emotions that can be understood singularly. Each pattern of being may be expressed as a figurative sculpture of hand cast aluminum alloy at half-life scale. Patterns of being may be referenced with Jungian archetypes. My hope is to make patterns of being more visible and tangible. Deject Selected as Best in show at the 2021 Piccolo Spoleto Art Exhibition ...

Mac Worthington - BIO Internationally recognized and locally renowned, Mac Worthington continues his inspirational fine art past his studio and into your home. Each piece reflects his desire for difference and neglect for the norm. Born and raised in Canton, Ohio also known as i?1/2Little Chicagoi?1/2, Mac was privileged to be molded around a family of artists. His father John i?1/2Jacki?1/2 Worthington was a local artist, well-known for this bronze sculptures, specifically busts for movie stars and sports figures included in the Pro Football Hall of Fame located in Canton, Ohio. His mother Marion Worthington was skilled in enameling and silver work. The combination of creative talent and environment made him destined for artistic success. Serving in the jungles of Vietnam at the age of nineteen Mac interpreted the indescribable feelings of war into powerful expressions of art. He attributes additional creativeness to influences such as Hells Angels, Elvis, Bob Dylan, Marlon Brando and the 60i?1/2s era. Going back to his roots he entered the world of heavy metal. Teaching himself to weld he used steel and iron to create massive, grandiose outdoor sculptures. Becoming more skilled with his mediums, he discovered the versatile use of high tech aluminum. This skill ...

David Vanorbeek - Metal speaks to me. Firstly it calls to me, drawing me to it with a magnetic pull that is impossible to resist. I might be walking or driving when suddenly I know for certain that discarded and abandoned metal is nearby, waiting for me to find it. And I always do. And then, when I see the beauty of the metal, it speaks to me again, telling me how it must be worked and shaped into a piece of sculpture that everyone can enjoy and share. For me, the great joy in my work comes from turning something considered worthless into the artwork it becomes. In this way I am showing my respect for the metal. The thread that runs like red wire through all my work is recycling. If I could, I would turn all the old metal and scrap iron I find into a museum of modern art. Just thinking of this idea makes my heart beat faster. My work has developed and taken different directions over the past twenty years, but was originally inspired by insects. In the same way, I see the beauty in these tiny and delicate, but at the same time immensely strong and ...

Esmoreit Koetsier - Sculpture for me has been redefined by where life has taken me. When I started in my early twenties, I had no idea that my simple flat pieces of steel were going to lead to mixed-materials and colorful fluid shapes. With each piece I challenge myself and push the envelope just a little more. I look outside of the traditional materials and discover new techniques. What has stayed true is that my work is an experiment with shapes, forms, objects, colors, arrangements, and materials. Gunnel Watkins - My intention is to experience creative expression inside the context of the transpersonal. transaEURC/peraEURC/sonaEURC/al/transE^pEtmrsEtmnl/ Adjective: Of, denoting, or dealing with states or areas of consciousness beyond the limits of personal identity. Don Dougan - My work comprises both abstracted and figurative imagery executed in a variety of mixed materials, with stone being the predominate medium. Other materials used (usually in conjunction with stone) include foundry cast metals, carved and joined wood, cast and fabricated plastics, cold-worked and kiln-formed glass, cast and carved hydraulic cements, cast/formed paper, welded/fabricated metals, gilding, and found/assembled objects. The more abstracted imagery is worked in pedestal pieces, large freestanding sculptures, and in wall-mounted relief sculptures. The figurative lip series is usually presented in wall-mounted reliefs, deep shadowbox framing, and occasionally as either a pedestal piece or a large freestanding work. The most recently begun series of work comprises pedestal-sized pieces using the imagery of the ship or the boat hull. Each series or each type of work allows me to express aspects of the human condition - the more abstracted works tend to reveal a more universal emotional/rational characterization of subject matter, the lip series tends to allow sensuality, humor, and more visceral expressions, while the ship series delves into personal/cultural memories and emotional journeys. Dermot O'Brien - Over the past fifteen years i have developed my own very unique art form working with wood and light. Using light as an added dimension to highlight the spaces between the wood a new sculpture is created. The sculptures always consist of several shapes the light exploring and defining the relationship between the bodies....

David Chang - Sharing My Artistic View By David K. Chang Art is an expression of the spirit that is not limited by time or space. Although artistic styles differ depending on the artist's background, rationales, interests, and feelings, the intent of all artwork is to guide audiences into a specific mood. Therefore, art arouses an echo between the audience and the artist. This echo can be one of excitement or agony, of humor or anger, of comfort or sadness, of oppression or complete release, or one of inexpressible description. Artists continue to explore their own finished work as well as to encourage audiences to gain a deeper understanding of that work. Excellent artwork often comes from self-examination. Even though an artist may believe he is developing and refining his style by intuition, this intuition is usually the artist's unrecognized expression of his reflection, which has embedded itself into his subconscious. My inspiration frequently comes from my reflection on and enjoyment of nature, from my loving it and studying it. The artwork that comes from this reflection can express the resolution of conflict between man and nature, or the connection between them. These ideas can be articulated in the freedom ...

Sue Jacobsen - My "artist's eye" seeks both the extraordinary and the ordinarily-overlooked moments in nature, and presents them in a way that allows the viewer to see what I've seen--and loved enough to want to share it. My regional landscapes, painted in oil, capture the rural flavor of the Wood River Valley in Idaho where I've lived and worked for over 30 years. Previously, California coastal areas were my genre. My love of the ocean and its awesome infinity is equaled in the grandeur and peace of the nearby mountains --again, infinite subjects for my paintings. Just as my professional training in graphic design at Art Center School in Los Angeles served me well when I turned my creative skills to easel painting, this then enabled me to move with ease and enthusiasm when sculpture'found me', and I learned to see with new eyes--in 3 dimensions now! My sculptures are figurative, of people or animals, and I seem to have special ability to capture the likeness and personality of my subjects. While I consider myself to be primarily self-taught, I continue to seek out other professional painters and sculptors whose work I admire, with...
