Artist Statement

A Zen proverb: “When the student is ready, the teacher will come.” I returned to art class several years ago after a long hiatus during which I was busy with family and work. Studying with Judy Schaefer, an accomplished artist, has been my good fortune. In addition, I studied with the late Carol Stronghilos and with Jennifer Mazza and Amy Robinson at the Art Center at Old Church in Demarest, NJ.

Since then, exploring the possibilities of a “visual dance in space” is my ongoing pursuit. Using acrylic paint and a variety of other media in these explorations, I strive to create art that evokes movement, vitality, and enthusiasm.

My dance in space is a holistic endeavor. For example, years ago when I was in college, I participated in a Master Class with modern dance choreographer, Alwin Nicolais. After some warm-ups, Nicolais asked us to explore an interesting position using the “personal space” where we were standing. I quickly dropped to the floor, twisted into a pretzel-like pose and was surprised when he directed the group’s attention to me. He asked me, “given the position you are in, how would you now move?”

I lifted an arm; Nicolais stopped me and said, “That position would not move like that. Try it again.” I tried a few alternatives until he finally announced, “You have it!” The position I had created would indeed move that way.

Today, the elements of dance (and that lesson in particular) are metaphors for my work. The exploration of dance’s possibilities, its energy, rhythm, gesture, and balance have inspired me as I work to create art that “moves” in the spirit and intensity of Nicolais’ lesson.
