Artist Statement

Born in Jurmala, Latvia.

I studied in the School of Arts in Riga and graduated from the Latvian State Academy of Arts. This Academy was and still is considered Latvian most prestigious unversity of the fine arts. I specialized in theater stage painting and have designed the sets for a number of theater productions. I have been painting since my graduation from university. For 10 years, I taught visual and fine art history. In 2001 I moved to Toronto, Canada.
Many of my paintings are in private collections in Latvia, Russia, Germany, Belgium, Sweden, Finland, Canada and the USA.
My favorite hobby is travelling, which inspires me in my artist work greatly. The most important in my work is to express my emotions and feelings. In my earlier works painting was more connected with subject than in my latest. Now I'm paying more attention to the rythm and colours. I like to improvise and use opportunity of unexpected moments which happen during my work.
