Artist Statement

The artwork I create is an appreciation of beauty. Its a fulfillment of a lifetime of inner reflection. Its a study in light and color, contrast and drama. I use a modern palate and palate knife almost exclusively when I oil paint. I attempt to unify my work and use standard techniques of the masters and my own compositional and contextual sensitivity to capture an emotion or fleeting moment in time.

I am an impressionist oil painter. I use impressionistic realism as well as abstract style when I use watercolor. When I design jewelry, I love textural asymmetry.

Im highly intrigued by randomness and dis-order, commonality and social chasms, absurdity and balance. I take inspiration from spirituality and desire awareness and compassion. The learning process is the most enjoyable part of the whole experience for me.

The artwork I create is supposed to add beauty to this world. I spent a large part of my life being selfish and not taking into account all the other considerations of all the people that might be affected by any decision I might make. I wasted an incredible amount of time trying to figure out what it was that was going to make me happy when in reality what makes me happiest is making other people happy. Some people probably see it as showing off and in a lot of cases theyre probably right, but when Im showing off Im trying to create a laugh or an expression of Joy from somebody and thats to me bringing beauty into this world. So when I see color and great color combinations I feel a visceral reaction within me and usually its a reaction to the beauty of what Im seeing.

Theres a lot of different ways to depict a scene in such a way as to elicit an emotion, it just so happens that my favorite tool is color. I really like the idea of using color to spin reality. Ive worked on my drawing a lot over the years including taking some classes all in support of my desire to create beauty through color. I have fallen in love with what I do and how I do it and the results Im getting. My paintings are a reflection of a lifetime of self reflection and soul searching.

I use a lot of oil paint because I like the way it feels and I like the timing of how it dries, but most of all I like the way the colors mix and how vibrant they are for such a long time. I also like using texture to get my point across and it seems like oil paint works well that way. Although oil paint is my favorite, I like to use watercolor quite a bit and also I dabble in ceramics. One of my favorite things in life is learning new things. I like to be challenged with something new to see how good I can get at that particular skill and to see how others are doing around me. Figure drawing class for three semesters at City college in San Francisco gave me a great creative boost a few years ago. Now that Im living in Santa Rosa Im looking for creative opportunities in this region. Technology is giving me a lot of opportunities that I havent had in the past including the ability to dictate this artist statement
