Spotlight on the Anderson Museum of Contemporary Art

Like most other tourists that visit the remote town of Roswell in the unforgiving New Mexico desert, The International UFO Museum & Research Center is the reason why we come. After venturing into the acclaimed ground zero of UFO interests and activity, I came away more mesmerized by the subject, attending lectures by leading UFO and ET researchers - and with a bagful of alien dolls, t-shirts, pins, mugs, and other UFO souvenirs. It may seem bizarre but now I proudly wear my "Roswell, New Mexico" baseball cap around Honolulu. This may not be so far fetched when I recall the numerous UFO sightings here in Hawaii, including the one in November, 2005, complete with photographs, that I dropped off at the museum's research center for a friend of mine.

Art Fairs and Juried Shows
I frankly consider most art fairs a waste of time for the serious artist. Even so, if you intend to sell, you will in all likelihood still have to do them. I’ve done them. Most of my artists have done them. Most artists I know have done them. They provide you with those necessary lines for your resume, and you’re going to need plenty of those lines before any of the better galleries will consider your work.
For those of you who only execute installation-based work, or work that is strictly avant-garde, art fairs are of little relevance. But for the purpose of general knowledge, you may want to read this column anyway.

My Art Book Rejection
I'm sitting here at my desk, in my art-filled den, where I've just finished flipping through almost two years worth of work.
The UPS guy delivered it about an hour ago. My complimentary copy of my own book, "ART IN KING SIZE BEDS: A COLLECTOR'S JOURNAL" (www.artinkingsizebeds.com). As I see it sitting atop a pile of other art books, I can only wonder, "Why did creating this simple, straightforward, little book about contemporary art take so long?"
The answer is also simple. Rejection.

A Sculpture, A Show
The piece is ‘Amarilli and Corisca’, and I need a reason to finish it. My expanding family gives me one. I’d always planned on making my next big piece in the other building and converting the studio downstairs into living space. We are now four, and we live in a single room. No one can sleep in the kitchen because it floods every time it rains. The downstairs is huge by comparison, 18 x 25 feet, except there’s this seven foot round base in the center with these two statues on it. They have to go. Irena is friend of mine who has always liked my work. She’s Croatian, but speaks perfect Italian, and has just gotten a job with an art gallery in Forte dei Marmi. It’s near by, and it’s the Italian Riviera.

Utilizing Postcards and Newsletters—Cheaply
I’ve written this section under the assumption that you’re not yet in a gallery. If you are in one, just follow their lead on this issue; they’ll likely know how to handle it. If they don’t, just have them read this blog, or my book. Please note however, the blog’s free.
Postcards, like copies of articles, are a very useful promotional tool. All you need is a well-photographed image of a strong work to produce one. Most printing firms, and postcard companies, can help you with layout. I tend to prefer companies that specialize in postcards, since they’re often the cheapest.

A Chapter Closed!
I’ve been told that the idea of the Art Centre will not be going ahead. I was sad at first – and I’m sorry if this disappoints some of you guys, you were all very supportive – but I also have to admit to more than a little relief. It would have been interesting to put all the pieces in place and see it take shape and come to life. I’m sure I would have met interesting people and made contacts for collaborations and exhibition opportunities, both for myself and others – the potential was great – but to be honest, without the money to do it properly I would have been reluctant to invest so much of my time, energy and expectation on something that would never acquire the ‘lightness’ my patroness and I had idealised and would end up hovering over the valley like an ominous shadow – a vision of Howard Hughes’ sea-plane somehow comes to mind.

Prosperity in the Print Market
For artists seeking success in the print market, there are many choices to be made. Such as should marketing be on a local, regional or national level? Should the artist self-publish or seek representation through an established publisher? Having wrestled those questions to a conclusion, the formula for success can be boiled down to:
- Product
- Promotion
- Persistence
- Public Perception
