Hidden Lanes
The idea for the art-in-nature project ‘Hidden Lanes’ begun in 2001. When I was visiting the location ‘De Manteling’, an nature reservation in the province Zeeland on the island Walcheren (the Netherlands). This location was in the ‘Golden Age’ of Holland a place where wealthy people erected there summerhouses with nice gardens and very large parks. After centuries most of the houses are gone. Only two remain. What was also remaining where the trees and plants with a structure of lanes. Oaklane, Beechlane etc. The tought was to ask international artists to deal with this. Think about projects with mostly natural material which are inspired by the idea ‘Hidden Lanes’. So after a long period of years a new organisation in the province Zeeland the Centre for Visual Art Zeeland, was able to give in February 2005 the starting sign.

Life Is Not A Disney Film
We all know it. It's seems silly to even say it. Life is not a Disney film.
Still, fantasy is so alluring. Wouldn't it be great if we could really live the lives we've fantasized? The remote control would be in our hands so that we could block out any undesirable channels. We could zap out any semblance of unpleasantness before it crept into our storyline. Everything would be in Technicolor and we would always be animated, shiny and happy.

Playhouse inspired by Gaudi...
In my family you do not buy a playhouse. You design it and you build it yourself. This one is for Morten's daughters, Lucca and Laura. Originally our plans were a playhouse with 6 walls - a hexagon. And a tower, from which you have a wide view. A gazebo. Morten and I were a little relieved when some strong female influence made the plans less ambitious:
A four sided house with a chimney.
Morten and I decided, that the playhouse design should be based on the fantastic Spanish architect Antonio Gaudi's characteristically warped form - see about Gaudi below. We have seen his work in Barcelona. And. Newly we had seen playhouses in Legoland, see the article "Hi sculptor...I mean you!!!" for more about Legoland.
Lucca has decided the color scheme. Yellow walls. Red windows and door. Green roof. Her mother has decided the overall design criteria: No spiders.

Writing. Painting.
As I tidy up the studio now that the summer is coming quickly to an end, I find in a forgotten drawer notes and diary pages written many years ago. I open another drawer one with more recent letters. I take the letters and arrange them on the large desk standing by the window. Now the old and the new letters lie side by side! Next I make a broad selection, assemble some of the writings together and rewrite parts of them. Then I cut a lot and add a bit. So now let me see how it looks this copy and paste operation, an operation that in painting would have been quite difficult, not to say impossible.

Paintings That Make Me Hurl
First off, let me just say that I love animals. Dogs, cats, horses, penguins, armadillos ... Love 'em!
But you know what? Do we really have to see them in paintings? I just don't think they work. I've visited some of the best museums where I've seen these lovely pastoral scenes painted by great artists. You look down, and there's "Fido" looking up at his master!
UGH!!!

Limiting Success?
Have you heard of the woman who always cut off both ends of a ham before putting it into a pot to cook? When asked why, she replied, “That’s the way my mother always does it.” Further investigation revealed grandma started the technique of cutting the ends of her ham before cooking. Her reason was simple; she didn’t have a pot large enough to fit a whole ham.
I equate the practice of limiting edition sizes of digital prints, best known and primarily marketed under the giclée moniker, to cutting off the ends of the ham. The practice of limiting editions has evolved from being due to the physical and financial limitations of the printing process to limiting giclée edition sizes that can be faithfully and endlessly reproduced as a means to artificially create demand.

Art and nature walk "The Legend"
We did start with a symposium art-in-nature on the 19th of May. After several discussions and talks we did choose the name which is the headline above this article. It was a clever decision as we understood later. People of the region know about this story and people from other parts of the country liked to know about it. That because it is a dramatic story and it was perfect to inspire the artists.

My Week in Los Angeles
Before sharing the highlights of my Los Angeles trip, I respond here to my critics of which a surprisingly large number have surfaced, as evidenced by the preponderance of negative comments posted in response to my blog. To my Critics:
Next year, I celebrate twenty years of curating exhibitions, so perhaps the reason that I seem so well connected or have cause to name drop is that I’ve been involved in the artworld for a very long time. In fact, I have experienced every possible role- collector, independent curator, art writer, gallerist, art educator, performance artist, museum curator and exhibiting artist. I’ve organized hundreds of exhibitions for myriad spaces ranging from the non-art Staten Island Ferry and Pavilions grocery store to infamous venues like the Bellevue Art Museum or the Contemporary Arts Center.
