Michael, I agree that buying art , buying nice things and going to restaurants spreads the wealth and lifts everyone up. I'm not so worried about the people who are embarrassed by buying art now. Why were they buying it in the first place? For the label? Because some gallery owner said this artist was "all the rage" You don't need a lot of disposable income to buy great art. My advice to aspiring collector's: Set a price limit your pocket book can handle and buy art when you travel, where you live and that you love. I like the idea of helping other artists especially the young emerging ones, but I don't feel bad for them. There is not a successful artist I know that hasn't had to do many other things besides "Their Work" to support their loved ones and put food on the table. Diversity of work does not only feed your body but can feed your art as well.

If you buy art, many people still think you're being fancy or vain or you're trying to be something you're not. But what if you just LOVE art and must have it? What if you see it as an expression of your soul?

something about 'art fairs' or conventions, or whatever you want to call them....anyway, something about them just seems antithetical to the point of art. true art is meant to identify with a concept that is typically not already prevalent and showcasing on such a large scale seems hypocritical and pretentious

I agree as well but when people don't have money, in the times of hardship, art and the 'extras' are the first to go. One of my hobbies is making sterling silver wire wrapped jewelry (handmade) and I definitely see the difference between today and two years ago :-(

Good art is cultural heritage in my opinion (the question is of course how to define "good"). Even if it's only small or very modern, it's developping every day to a part of history and expresses this part. This is the fascinating thing about art. It is more important than archives or historical books, if you want to discover a certain period of history. Therefore art should have nothing to do with status or money, but should be accesible for everyone.

some how you will find a way to do what you love. For some, consuming or creating art is a reason for living: perhaps not the only reason, but a priority nonetheless. It is or should be a top priority for a civilization: so paint & buy on!

Way beyond. In Fabre's staged rant (dance, cabaret, rock and roll even standup), the excesses of the last 8 years - the cranking up of personal gratification at expense of economic stability - has given hate-mongers an undeserved cultural voice.

Your article reminds me of when I'm selling my ceramics and buyers get funny about the price I make a quick comparrison to, say, the price of a cell phone card or even a cell phone. These are consumables that people regard necessaties yet they get consumed at a remarkable rate. This usually gets folk giving a re-take on the price of the item I wanna sell them.

Ok, Michael, I went back and read the rest of it and you're quite right, buying from artists is a great way to make yourself feel like you're doing something great for yourself, and also for others. I suppose considering the direction of the blog taken as a whole, it isn't really necessary to address quality here and now. It can be saved for later. Ever read 'Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance'?

Your opening turned me right off. All art is not uplifting, or even worth looking at. I am very against the idea that art is generic, that there is no difference between one artist and another, that there is no good or bad. You compare McDonalds or KFC to places with real tradition and a very personal touch like a place I ate steak tartare in last night here in Paris, washed down with a great Cotes du Rhone. How can you lump it all together and still call yourself a fan of Art? I will go back and read the rest after I recover...truly apalling...

Michael,
Fantastic perspective. Art has always been a priority in my family, but the present economic downturn has certainly affected us. I used to spend ~5% to 10% of my annual income on art. The last 12 months, we've spent 0. It has nothing to do with desire or with supply of amazing art, it is just the reality of the world we live in now and setting priorities. As you said: “Well, you gotta eat."

This is when I add the fact that they are supporting the continuation of the arts in general by buying art from artists and not some mass produced junk from we all know where.
And by this point, most people are ready to give themselves the opportunity to experience art collecting.
