05/10/2006: "Alberto Burri"

Alberto Burri has become one of Italy’s favourite artists in the last few months. Thanks to a well-thought-out exhibition of worldwide interest in Rome this winter, the somewhat forgotten Italian maestro has been put back in the spotlight, ten years after his death, alongside international contemporary masters such as Robert Rauschenberg and Yves Klein.

In a city like Rome, where the amount of Ancient or Renaissance art is enough to suffocate any contemporary art initiative, the exhibition « Alberto Burri. The artists and the matter 1945-2004 » is a breath of fresh air. It is also a brave attempt to convince the Italian people and the entire art world that creativity in Rome did not stop at Bernini.

During the whole of the twentieth century, the techniques evolved discreetly, inducing one of the major contemporary breakthroughs: Alberto Burri (1915-1995) was one of the first to experiment with different materials and to make these materials become the subject itself.

The exhibition shows Alberto Burri as the instigator of many different forms of art, and elevates Italian contemporary art worldwide. A very motivated and interesting exhibition. A must-see.

Enjoyed your blog Alice, short but very much to the point. The first trip I managed to make on the earnings from my art was to Italy, that was as far as I could go back then. Fontana's and especially Burri's work opened new doors for me and took me much further than I had ever expected to go on my budget. It is good to hear efforts are being made to give him the credibility and visibility he most certainly deserves.
