10/19/2005: "Win $1000 and an Art Trip..." by Sue Spaid
So long as you act like some network of self-effacing losers, I’m reluctant to reveal much, for fear you might actually visit the places and/or friends I cite. Enjoy my photos… it doesn’t much matter where they’re from… And since everything I mention is already famous, labels seem redundant. If you fancy the following tidbits, click on websites for details. Whoever can identify the location of all of these images wins $1000 plus an art trip with me! Too bad I didn’t run this contest last month… you would have enjoyed my New England driving tour! Three answers are out-and-out freebies.

Wish you knew where to find Daniel Buren’s bandaged sculptures in a public park?
Like any ex-communist, you secretly crave Constantin Meunier’s socialist monuments.
Ever sat through a three-hour Allan Sekula film??? If “yes,” aren’t you bragging a little?
If you’re so in-the-know, you already “love” Saskia Olde Wolbers’ poli-sci-fi videos.
Since you think Boijmans van Beunigan is the world’s best museum, let’s return together.
Pina Bausch’s Palermo, Palermo knocks your socks off, so you’d better go barefoot.
Tate Modern’s Frida Kahlo survey was worth the airfare. Added bonuses included the
East End/West Indies play “The Big Life,” lunch at Liberty of London, dozens of
colored skylights sliced into John Soanes’ roofs, the glorious Álvaro Siza and Eduardo
Souto de Moura temporary Serpentine pavilion, plus Trafalgar Square’s Marc Quinn.
Hooray for Marian Goodman who finally exhibited a woman artist- Cristina Iglesias.
After “Brasil” and “Mexico,” “Russia” turns the Goog into a boring “dacha.” Luckily,
MOMA has amped up since re-opening, although two Moholy-Nagys’ disappeared.
Wish you had time to chase Smithson’s island from Pier 46 to East River Park? It’s free.
Ever visit Eastern State Penitentiary? I dare you to visit this crumbling, scary place.
Shipyard IPA, Gritty’s Stout and Casco Bay may be Portland’s best brewskis, but its
best skiseum is Bowdoin College’s Perry-MacMillan Arctic Museum and its biggest
buzzkill is L.L. Bean’s hunting/fishing specialty store in nearby Freeport.
Since Rockwell Kent rocks our vision, why only one venue for his survey? His
hilarious cartoons and clever ads are as amazing as his glaring paintings of sunlight
reflecting off of white sheets, sand, stones, icebergs, water, and buildings.
If you enjoyed the movie My Architect, you’d better get your butt to Exeter Academy.
You’ll have to read my review of Thomas Hirshhorn in artUS to find out my p.o.v.…
Seeking a memorable meal in New Haven? Climb atop Paul Rudolph’s architectural
wonder to the roof-café. You’d be lucky to have a lunch date as energetic as mine…
Syracuse’s Everson Art Museum may be in dire straights, but John Freyer’s exhibition of
soon-to-be-exported used clothes should instigate a fascinating African odyssey. Find
Sol LeWitt Serraesque strips of sinuous concrete straddling a Syracuse University hill.
When in Erie, try the 6% Riverdale Ale. Do they actually use river water like Coors?
P.S. If everything cited is so “super-dooper” famous, what’s holding you back?
Best Advice Given- “Never Turn Down a Gig!” Only “losers” consider location first.
Wouldn’t you like to know the artists/estates who “made it” due to my risk-taking????
