01/11/2005: "The Art Collecting Bug" by Michael Corbin

I have a disease. It's not really a physical or mental ailment. I call it, "The Collecting Bug." More specifically, "THE ART COLLECTING BUG."

I think it's the same sickness that collectors of comic books or snowglobes or antique cars have, but only a different strain. I think that I may know how and where I got it, but I don't know how to get rid of it.

William Dick - Hip and edgy. Beautiful texture. I wish I could afford him!
Reidbar, 2004, 250 x 250 cm

Did I catch it as a schoolkid when I attended class field trips to the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York? That was many (and I stress many) years ago. I didn't feel sick back then and surely the disease went into remission over the years.

Hmm. I think it may have come back when I lived and worked in Richmond, Virginia. Virginia is loaded with flea markets and shops that sell old paintings that have lost their way to greatness. I remember buying a couple of those, which I still have. Did the disease hit then?

Peter O'Neal - A lovely impressionist scene Dream09, 2002 14 x 11 inches

Maybe. I think I really got, "THE ART COLLECTING BUG" when I accidentally logged onto an art website. I couldn't believe it! Art that I could actually afford? You gotta be kidding me!

Yup. There it was. Clear as day. My first real painting by a real artist. Not one of those, "Velvet Elvis" creations. (Although Velvet Elvis has his place as well. Just not in my home). As I recall, it was a blue, red and yellow abstract piece. 16" by 20". Looking at it now, I don't know what the heck I was thinking. I think that I was in love with the price more than the actual painting. Anyway, that MUST BE when I truly caught the bug.

Vincent Pepi - Crazy abstracts! Love all his stuff. Painting 1225a, 1993 17 x 14 inches

Funny, because looking at the painting now, I almost get sick all over again. Fortunately, my taste has improved.

I guess I'm holding onto the painting on the chance that the artist will make it big one day. I doubt that will happen, but if I get rid of the painting and the artist becomes famous, guess what?

I'll really be sick.

To Micheal and to all my Artist friends,
To see and appreciate something wonderful is the essence of an artist's soul. Is it beauty found in nature that you love? Is it a city steet or a seascape? Maybe it is an conception or a feeling or a thought provoking statement.
An artist 'collects' images on canvas or in clay or stone. A collector desires the same, a moment to return to. Agreement with a creative soul, "Ah, yes I too, find this vision to be of great value!!!"
A collector, therefore is an artist and collects what is captured already.
I as an artist, have discovered the value of collecting, when I can, the work of other artists.
My own vision of what has value in my own work has become more defined. I no longer think " I can paint that!" I appreciate that an artist has already done it!

Dear Michael,
I was wondering if there were people like you out there at all. I only wish that we had more people like you, who are passionate supporters of the arts. Why shouldn't artists be able to support themselves doing the thing they love most? I find myself driven by this inexplicable force to create art, and I can't think of anything else that I want to do with my life other than make art, even with the constant discouragement of knowing how few artists are able to support themselves financially. It shouldn't be a choice between doing the thing you love and being able to eat.

Michael, the dialogue between artists and collectors is extremely important to both parties but sadly it is rare. to know that we will be able to share your insights as a collector on these blogs is very precious indeed and something i look forward to. thank you and thank absolutearts for bringing us all together and making this possible.

I must say that insomuch as todays *artworld* seems so very commercialized, it is quite refreshing to hear from someone who truly enjoys art as you so obviously do. How I wish there were only one such as you to enjoy my work as much!! It is so pitifully rare to actually meet someone who truly appreciates the work of an artist. Unfortunately, I haven't a website as yet, although I am working on one...the struggle for genuine recognition goes on.

Micheal, funny what you say rings a bell with me, some time back I had a collecter of my work, and year by year he would come round the studio and pick out the peices he liked, pay and then take his purchases away. Now I oten used to think what is it that keeps this man coming back year after year,so I asked him,was it because I was cheaper than the market, for example,? No it wasnt that,he was like you a collecter, who liked enough of my work to interest him to return to see what Id been up to each year, and he got some colleagues to also come round to purchase and veiw paintings and drawings, these people seemed to have a good time sifting through all the work, and Id make them coffee, and we'd sit about in the studio talking about art and the work Id done and the whys and wherefores, and we'd spend all afternoon doing this, and then after mulling over choices and prices we would come to agreements.I think that for a collecter or for someone who just likes art casually, its special to have a personal contact with an artist especially if they get into that artists work, and it is a two way relationship, and an unusual one,in that often a collecter can have an influence on an artists work, and a part to play in an age old tradition.

Thank You for your support of the arts. As the painter of Vibrant Color I applaud your disease and hope it stays with you for years to come. If you would like to try some vibrant color paintings that are impressionistic realism go to my website(which is up and running but I'm working out some things that need some fine tuning with my webmaster. Please comment to help me. Thank you again.
