10/11/2004: "DIGITAL NOW:"

You know the artist keeps changing and evolving while the world keeps dreaming of making a better donut. The result for the rest of the world is how to raise gas prices far and above $2.00 a gallon. For us Floridians, we just learned how to deal with hurricanes and how to buy plywood. Im wondering just who in government has ties to Home Depot; the plywood business, and gasoline?? - PRAYTEL.

The future as I see it is in fusing ART and ENTERTAINMENT. Art alone is too hi-brow for the world at the moment. People dont get it, cant absorb it, and sadly, theres very little room these days for aesthetics.
We are in a very pathetic state of mind these days. Thats pretty gloomy news I must admit. Moving ahead however, what people can handle is the superficial or the lighthearted. Anything with a deep message is too much to deal with. Action movies like Spiderman with super heroes is about as much as people can grasp. Art that has entertainment quality providing escapism seems to be the most successful in the current climate.

Thus, in deducting a plan for the future, stay tuned for my parties during ART BASEL in Miami Beach and in Los Angeles in January. These will be large warehouse type parties a la  "Eyes Wide Shut" with a twist.
A documentary in eroticism and surrealism.

You are illustrating the problem by seeing what is superficial as being synonymous with entertainment. In Europe and Asia people occasionally make films, songs and and other artworks that have depth and meaning this does not mean that we do not also occasionally find them entertaining.
It is sad and dangerous that the culture with the greatest control of the Earth's resources is one that appears to be afraid of any depth, ambiguity or complexity. The desire to simplify all things to a matter of consumption and power to consume is the problem that artists have a duty to address. If escapism is the audience leaving a prison, including the prison of ignorance (or certainty where there should be no certainty) it is a good thing if on the other hand, escapism means the renforcing of ignorance it is not.
